WHAT'S INSIDE...
To the casual passer-by, Irla’s richly painted portraits of Native American women are often mistaken for photographs or
photo-realism, however, her technique would more aptly be categorized as representational art with a flourish of tenebrism. Irla views creating an
exact duplicate (as with photo-realism), “a bit too mechanistic”. By contrast, her end goal
is “to create art” – the locus of which is to “capture the essence of the subject matter and/or vision and convey the story.” After testing a
variety of painting techniques, Irla found the techniques of the Old Masters, such as those employed by Caravaggio, most suited to her natural style, as
well as for the end result of creating dramatically illuminated flesh tones. She cites Caravaggio as being most influential toward the development of her
